Healthcare is now in the center of the national political debate. As a social and political advocacy group, we are beginning to get in on the ground floor. But before getting to what we are doing here at Logikos, we should take a look at what exactly is happening right now, what the status quo is, and what possible solutions there are to the current problem.
First, the status quo. The current law on healthcare is the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The A.C.A. has, for the last few years, provided coverage for millions of American. The form by which the care is provided, however, is fiscally problematic and politically challenging. The A.C.A. requires all adult citizens to participate in the exchange (the personal mandate), while grouping high and low cost insurees in common pools, thereby decreasing the cost of insurance for older citizens. The program also requires businesses providing insurance to their employees to comply with certain standards, and to spend their federal insurance subsides on plans that comply with A.C.A. standards (the business mandate). These two, the personal and the business mandate, are two of the most controversial parts of the A.C.A., along with the tax increases that make paying for the program possible.
At this time, Republicans in Congress are trying to repeal and replace the A.C.A. Their current plan, the plan 13 Republican Senators worked out in secret, does eliminate the personal and the business mandates, as well as cutting much of the taxes that the A.C.A. imposes. But it also throws 22 million people off of insurance, most of whom are members of low-income households. The tax cuts, on the other hand, will mostly benefit the wealthiest of Americans. Even though this plan is currently being reworked, its very basis is problematic.
What, then, is the solution? Here at Logikos we are working on a proposal that we intend to introduce as soon as it is ready. The plan will eliminate the personal mandate, it will provide tax cuts for companies and low-income individuals, and will be fiscally responsible. We are currently in the process of writing this proposal in legislative language, and will soon publish it and introduce it to the world.
